DUMPING WASTE CAUSES DEATHS

Dumping waste in rives is cause of contamination of water bodies. It is result of human activities. Water bodies include lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater. This dumping carries
hazardous/dangerous elements like industrial waste, oil, human waste and other chemicals that harm
aquatic life badly. Water gets polluted when contaminants are introduced in the natural environment.
For example, releasing inadequately treated wastewater into natural water bodies that leads to
degradation of aquatic life, which lead to public health problems for people living in downstream.

They may use the same polluted river water for drinking, bathing and irrigation. Dumping in rivers is the leading worldwide cause of death and diseases. Source of this dumping is either point or non-point source. Point sources have one identifiable cause of the pollution, such as a storm drain, wastewater treatment plant or stream. Non-point sources are more diffuse, such as agriculture and other field waste. River pollution is the result of the cumulative effect overtime. All plants and organism living in or being exposed to polluted water bodies can be impacted. The effects can damage individual species and impact the natural biological communities that they are part of.
Many towns and factories are built near river so that they can utilise water from the river for their
respective uses. But sometimes the water is not cleaned before it is put back into the river. This dirtying of water (also air and soil) is causing change in natural environment that is continuously damaging the surroundings. Rubbish like crisp packets, newspapers, bags, oil, poisonous substances, cans, bottles, human waste/excrement and other solid objects are destroying marine life massively.

The large pieces of plastic threaten the marine life causing injuries or mutilation to marines that become entangled in fishing nets or plastic bags. Another infamous example is killing of geese by getting chocked; bottle caps thrown in rivers along with other waste products are also affecting wildlife. Geese travel from one place to another according to the changing climate, for which they have to stop at different lakes and oceans where they get rest and have food. But the waste dumped in water carrying caps, beads and other products becomes the reason of their death.

On the other side severe pathogen pollution, the rise of which is largely down to the expansion of sewer system that discharge untreated wastewater into surface water that is estimated to affect up to one-half of Asian river stretches. In Pakistan, people mainly rely on surface water as their source of drinking water also utilises same water for bathing and for practicing daily routine work. Currently there appears to be an increase in the spread of Salmonella and this has been related to modern living conditions, such as mass food production (e.g. of poultry) and communal feeding. Alongwith this, dumping of industrial waste is also one of the most important factor affecting river water. The industrial waste include cafeteria garbage, dirt, masonry, concrete, scrap, metals, trash, oil, solvents, weed grass, trees scrap lumber or similar wastes. Industrial solid waste, which may be solid, liquid or gas held in containers where they get dumped in seas, river and oceans. Industrial waste has been a problem since the industrial revolution. Industrial waste is mostly toxic, ignitable, corrosive or reactive. If improperly managed, this waste can pose dangerous health and environmental consequences. Certain commercial products such as cleaning fluids, paints and pesticides discarded by commercial establishments or individuals are dangerous elements for marine life.

The industrial waste dumped in rivers causes change in pH value of water that is maintained naturally.

After rivers and lakes become acidic (6.5pH) various marine species like Salmon that have low tolerance for acidity didn’t survive, also other marines get affected. It is known that insects and shellfish (the food of big fishes) is also affected when rivers and lakes become acidic. Acidity also affects plants in water that cause the change in their development. The same acidic water evaporates and become the cause or acidic rain that destroys crops, fields, historical monuments and cause skin diseases to human beings.

Approximately 70% area is covered with water and by no means can one have any alternate for water
because all living species are relying on water, plants for development, marines for living and humans
for drinking and for routine purposes. We have already done worse to our habitat by destroying nature’s gift for our comforts. Usage of plastic bags, industrial products and other compounds that we use to make different product has facilitated us by various means but on the other hand has caused us a lot of damage. For marines the change of pH has caused to lose their appetite by which marine life is destroying, mixing of different compounds like sulphur, mercury etc is causing this disease to marine life. Other than that pesticides used in agriculture fields to avoid insect attack is also causing damage to marine. When rain comes all the pesticide get dissolved in water than dumped into the river where it kills fishes. To human beings also it is affecting badly because we mainly rely on water for nearly everything like drinking, bathing, washing, cleaning etc. This polluted water cause infections and deadly diseases to people because of contaminants it carries with it.

To control these all factors we have to stop dumping all kind of waste in rivers and have to find an
alternate for the deposition of waste. Other than that we have to avoid use of plastic, polythene bags
and other stuff that carries chemical composition. Effective filter plant projects should be formed that
can facilitate people to some extent (as for drinking purpose), so that people do not get affect by various diseases and infections. Industrial waste should also be treated by other means, where it complies no effect with marine and nature. Humans have developed techniques by the passage of time. New inventions and technologies are being introduced to make things easier for everyone but what we gain by this ease if we destroy nature and its surroundings and more importantly marine life which are very resourceful for our life.
