GULLY BOY MOVIE (REVIEW)
Sharjeel Baloch

Gully boy is an ode to all those who are told that they cannot dream. The film is story of a poor fellow Murad whose dreams are bigger than his reality. Our protogonist is determined not to let his circumstances restrict his ambitions. The movie is loosely based on the life of Naezy and Divine who made their journey from rags to rap stars. The movie reportedly revolves around those rapers who work on rapping about crimes in their respective neighbourhoods to finding a voice and becoming activists through music.
Gully boy is a 2019 Indian Hindi musical drama film directed by Zoya Akhter and written jointly by Zoya and Reema Kagti. So this is the fifth film of  Zoya Akhter as a director. Her last two films “Dil Dharakne Do and “Zindagi Na Mile Gi Dobara” were box office hits. But Gully Boy is a totally different from them. It is something unique made on Indian street rappers.
Cast of movie includes Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Kalki Koechlin, Siddhand Charturvedi and Vijay Razz in supporting roles.
Gully Boy is a film about a 22-year old Murad, son of a driver, from a ghetto in Mumbai. Murad’s parents work hard to educate him so that he could have a white collar job. Meanwhile Murad realises his inner calling to be rapper. And this story is about Murad’s journey from realising his love for rap and chasing his dream to inadvertenthy transcending his class. The poetry is conscious of the city’s socio-economic fabric and highlights the challenges faced by the disenfranchised youth of minority.
The story justifies the hype it created even before releasing. It’s a worth watching entertainment. Every one is good in his character. The contribution of Zoya Akhter’s whole team is brilliant and is visible throughout. The film has a gripping narrative.
Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhutt, as expected, have performed greatly. It is also great to watch Siddharth Chatervedi. Gully Boy is the love story between Murad and Safeena. It becomes clear that they have a beautiful understanding which comes from being todether for many years. Music of movie is also adorable. Most songs are rap songs which some people might won’t like. The songs are potent and loaded with powerful words that especially resonate in their respective situations. It is awareness of the fact that the poverty it documents is also being commodified by those who seek to benefitted from it.
